Configure Mail.app

Mail.app is a POP/IMAP email client made by Apple available only on Mac OS-X. When these instructions are followed, you will be able to check your email both via Mail.app and the webmail interface.

Adding AN IMAP account

mailapp_prefmenu.jpg IMAP allows you to check your mail. To add an IMAP mailbox, open the preferences panel. The panel is located by clicking on Mail in the top tool bar next to the blue apple and then clicking Preferences.  Once in the Preferences menu, click on Accounts to add a new account.  Next click on the silver plus (+) at the bottom of the window.  This will open the first dialog.

mailapp_newimap_smallThe first dialog has four entries.  The first is a dropdown box--switch this box to "IMAP". In the second box, Account Description, enter a name to identify this mailbox.  In the third box, Full Name, place the name you want connected to this MLDS email address.  Most often this will be your name. Finally the last box, Email Address, should be set to the full email address given to you by MLDS.  Click on the image at the left to see an example.

thumb_mailapp_newimap2 Once you have filled out all four boxes, click Continue to go to the next screen.  This screen has three boxes: Incoming Mail Server, User Name, and Password. The first, Incoming Mail Server, should be set to MLDS's IMAP server. It is mail.michiganlivestock.com.  The second box, User Name, is your full email address: ' This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it '. Finally the last box should be filled with the password set up with MLDS.  This box will only show dots when you type to protect your password.  Click on the image at the right to see a larger example.

Click Continue to go onto SMTP setup (Sending Mail). Mail.app will check at this point if it can connect to the MLDS server and pick up your mail.  If it can, it will go to the next window. If not, check over your settings again.

Congratulations! We are almost done!  One last step and your email will be at your control with the power of Mail.app.

Sending Mail Via MLDS

thumb_mailapp_oumail The final window is for configuring Mail.app to send mail via MLDS.  This window has three boxes and one check box.  In the first box, Outgoing Mail Server, place mail.michiganlivestock.com.  If another server is entered, delete it and place the MLDS server name in its place.  Next make sure the Use Authentication box is checked. You should now find that you can type in the last two boxes.  In the next to last box, User Name, place your entire MLDS email address like before: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  In the last box, place your MLDS password.  This again will be masked to protect your password.  You can click on the image at the right to see a larger picture with example settings.

Now click Continue to finish the configuration. At this point, Mail.app will try to connect to the SMTP server at MLDS.  If all your information is entered correctly, you should see a new mailbox listed in your Mail.app screen.
